Coal Tit Bird

Identification of Coal Tit Bird

Coal Tit Bird 1 Length: 10-11.5cm Wingspan: 17-21 cm Call: "tyu'ii"

Coal Tit Bird is a small short-tailed tit with a small fine bill. It has a big, boldly marked head, with a black cap that extends on to the nape, framing an oblong white nape-patch. The cheeks are white and it has a large amount of black on the throat, which spreads onto the shoulder where it breaks up into black flecking. The underparts are whitish-buff, more strongly coloured on the flanks. It has white spots on the tips of the greater and median coverts, forming a double wingbar. Various races occur within our region; British birds have an olive-grey mantle and wings, which are blue-grey on birds from continental Europe.

Habitat of Coal Tit Bird

Coal Tit Bird is a resident, although in some years northern populations may head southwards in large numbers. It is a bird of conifer forest, and found at a wide range of altitudes. It has a preference for spruce, and also occurs widely in mixed forest, although in some parts of its range it lives in purely deciduous woods. It is common in parks and large gardens, almost always where some conifers are present. It ranges more widely in winter, joining mixed flocks and often visiting feeders in gardens.

Song / Call of Coal Tit Bird

Coal Tit Bird 2

The song of a Coal Tit Bird is a rapid, rather high-pitched repetition of a clear double note, reminiscent of the Great Tit's song but delivered at a brisker pace and sounding sweeter and 'tighter', as in "pew-ti-tew ti-tew ti-tew ti-tew ti-tew-pi", "tii'cher tii'cher tii'cher tii'cher tii'cher" or "ti'chew ti'chew ti'chew ti'chew ti'chew", or a more trisyllabic "too'i'tee too'i'tee too'i'tee too'i'tee". Individual songsters can give a wide variety of versions, all sung on the same basic theme but differing in rhythm, pace and emphasis. It also has many different calls; a frequently heard one is a twanging "tyu'ii" or "ti'duu'ii", or a monosyllabic "tuuy". It also has high-pitched conversational calls such as a sharp "psitt, psitt" and a shivering Goldcrest-like"tss'ss'ss'ss'ii".
