Penduline Tit Bird

Identification of Penduline Tit Bird

Penduline Tit Bird 1 Length: 10-11.5cm Wingspan: 16-17.5cm Call: "tsseeeo"

Penduline Tit Bird is a very small and rather delicate tit-like bird, with a sharp little bill. It has a pale greyish-white head dominated by a long black 'bank robber' mask that meets over the bill, boldest in the male but narrower in the female. It has a white throat and pinky-buff underparts, and the male has reddish-brown blotching on the breast. The mantle and wing coverts are chestnut and contrast strongly with the pale head, although this feature is duller and browner on the female.

Habitat of Penduline Tit Bird

Penduline Tit Bird is a rare but annual and increasingly regular visitor to Britain, it breeds from central Europe eastwards, where it is a summer visitor, and in southern Europe, where it is resident. It is usually found along the margins of swamps, lakes and rivers in scrubby deciduous trees and bushes, or in reedbeds with bushy clumps and edges. It constructs a pouch-shaped nest with an entrance tunnel, hanging in the thin outer branches of a small tree, often over water or sometimes within a reedbed.

Song / Call of Penduline Tit Bird

The call of Penduline Tit Bird is a rather high-pitched (about 6kHz) and plaintive single descending note "tsseeeo", lasting an average of 0.6 seconds, quite far-carrying and with a penetrating quality. It is similar to the call of the Reed Bunting but longer, stronger and more downward-inflected. It can give various versions of this call in different contexts, often using a shorter "tssu", and in alarm a sharper, even-pitched, trilling "srrri" or "sreee". It also has a buzzing note, "tzzz". The full song is a collection of trills and whistles interspersed with call notes, very like the songs of the Greenfinch or even Canary, delivered at a measured pace and fairly slowly, with pauses between short phrases, as in "pyuu.. .tsi pyuu... tzzssrrnrrrrrrr... tzzssmrrrrrrrr... yup'piy'ioou... trr'r'r'r'r'r... ichivichivichivi.. .pyuu... tsi pyuu... tzzssrmrrmrr..." etc.
